Carpe Diem

I have always loved the Serenity Prayer that says, “Grant me the Serenity to accept the things I cannot change; Courage to change the things I can and the Wisdom to know the difference.

This prayer has brought me comfort and peace many times in the midst of storms.

I stumbled upon a new version of this prayer, however, and it resonated so deeply with me.

“I am not longer accepting the things I cannot change. I am changing the things I cannot accept.”

This twist on the Serenity Prayer feel empowering. I not longer have to be a victim of my circumstance, but rather acknowledge that the power is within me to change what I cannot accept.

I am finding this so true with many of the people that I coach. In the past year, with over 2500 hours of coaching behind me, I see this theme emerge.

Thoughts like, “I want my teen to be different, my husband to be different, my wife to be different.”

You cannot change other people, even those you love, but you can change how you respond to those people based on what you think.

That is where your power lies.

What are you “accepting” in your life because change feels hard or overwhelming?

Step out of the shadows. I challenge that if you are sitting in a place you are not wanting to accept, it is already hard. You are already experiencing the feelings you are trying to avoid.

It doesn’t have to be this way. You have the power to create any life you want. You may just need some new tools in your toolbox.

I believe in you. I believe in the power that lies within you. I believe you can have the life you dream of. Don’t wait to believe in yourself.

Carpe Diem. Seize the day. Make your lives Extraordinary.
